Safety

Committed to Safety at Every Step

Through decades of service, our organization has learned invaluable lessons about the importance of fostering a family-like atmosphere and prioritizing the well-being of every team member.

We know from experience

Well-Trained Teams Make Safer Job Sites

Safety is not just a word—it’s a culture that we actively nurture every day to ensure that everyone returns home safely at the end of their shift. All crews undergo thorough training and certification before being assigned to specific tasks, ensuring they are fully equipped to perform their duties safely. Ongoing training allows our organization to adapt and respond to new information and experiences, providing our team with the tools they need to work without incident.

Prioritizing Risk Management Is Our Standard

Our Commitment

How We Make Safety Part of the Job Every Day

Each workday begins with a Job Site Assessment (JSA) and a Terrain Hazard Assessment (THA). The JSA focuses on identifying specific hazards at the job site and offers guidance on how to avoid them. If the team works at multiple locations throughout the day, a new JSA is completed for each site to address any new conditions that may arise. The THA, conducted at the start of each day and for each site, serves to assess the terrain for potential risks—such as steep, unstable, or wet conditions—that could compromise safety and efficiency. If any area is deemed unsafe for the planned work, a safety plan must be developed to minimize the risk of incidents. In cases where terrain poses significant danger, work may be postponed until a comprehensive plan is in place to address the hazards.

Lastly, all SMEX team members are empowered to stop work at any time if unsafe conditions are identified. The Stop Work Authority ensures that everyone has the ability to speak up and contribute to maintaining a safe work environment.

Job Site Assessment (JSA)

Identifies site-specific hazards and provides safety guidance, with a new JSA completed for each location worked throughout the day.

Terrain Hazard Assessment (THA)

Assesses terrain risks like steep or unstable ground. If an area is deemed unsafe, a safety plan is developed to minimize risk.

Authority to Speak Up

All SMEX team members are trained and empowered to stop work at any time if unsafe conditions are identified.
